These are awareness programs that result in the creation of materials or applications in ways that may not directly tie in to the online communities. Two of the initiatives within this category are the creation of one or more documentaries about diabetes (focused on stories about living with diabetes) and mashing up Web 2.0 technologies such as Twitter, Google Maps and Flickr with data from people with diabetes to help map and improve trends of blood sugar values around the world.
The newsletters feature the stories of a member, spotlight a post from the community, bring up the most interesting discussions and videos and highlight important events and news. Currently we are producing a monthly newsletter in English for TuDiabetes.org. We will be launching soon one in Spanish for EsTuDiabetes.org.
This unit focuses on diabetes awareness initiatives and programs. The main goal of this unit is to provide the members of our communities with diverse outreach programs and projects where they can express themselves creatively while raising diabetes awareness inside and outside our online communities. The programs in this unit fall into three main categories: Community-generated Content Initiatives, External Initiatives and Newsletters.
These are programs that involve the participation of community members on the generation of diabetes awareness materials. Each program revolves around a specific theme and works as an interactive conduit that connects individuals through self-expression and creativity. As a result, the community participates in the generation of useful and authentic content, which in turn, strengthens the community through the participation and empowerment of the members. Some of our community-generated content initiatives are: Word in Your Hand, Drawing Diabetes and Diabetes Supplies Art.
